The Powhatan Sports Complex was designed to house practice quarters and support spaces for the Old Dominion University’s new Division 1-AA football team. The complex also is home to the university’s women’s field hockey and lacrosse programs.
The 58,000-square-foot facility is situated on a nine-acre site at the edge of COST PER SQ FT$332.00FEATURED IN2009 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized campus, at the corner of a significant intersection. The main building is an L-shaped structure with an entrance positioned at the corner to provide visibility and proximity to pedestrian traffic arriving from campus.
It is adjacent to two football practice fields and a field hockey and lacrosse field with grandstand seating for 1,500. This field includes concession/restroom facilities and a press box, and can be observed from a second-story terrace that extends along almost the entire length of the building.
The building materials of brick, cast stone, composite metal panels, and glass with solar screens closely mirror the materials and color of the existing campus.
