This new student center replaced an outdated and underutilized kitchen/cafeteria in the administration building. It provides a central campus gathering point and spaces for students to meet, work and study.
The student center is built with masonry bearing walls with brick veneer and high-efficiency curtainwalls. One challenge, COST PER SQ FT$175.34FEATURED IN2009 Architectural Portfolio of its location within the existing campus buildings, called for replacing some existing service tunnel tops to support increased vehicle traffic.
The following requirements were designed within the new building: natural lighting to all major areas; two multipurpose/student learning spaces; open cafeteria and student union with views to the rest of the campus; a platform area for entertainers and presentations; and overall additional space for student organizations to congregate. The new, centrally situated student center has become the central hub for the campus and has increased food-service receipts by 70 percent.
