Integral to the design was the decision to create a high-performance, energy-efficient and environmentally responsible educational facility providing students with a healthful, innovative educational experience. The consolidation of the high school math, science and visual/performing-arts programs within the facility has encouraged interdepartmental student and facility planning/interaction; the new student commons serves as the catalyst. Furthermore, the sustainable principles incorporated into the design are being incorporated into Elgin Academy’s curriculum.
Joint community use is another component of the building’s program. The new building also is home to the Elgin OPERA, Elgin Theater Company and other community groups.
