The expansion to the Upper County Campus of Bucks County Community College increases the size of the existing facility by 28,500 square feet and includes computer labs, classroom/flex and office/administrative spaces, and a student commons.
The expansion incorporates a student cafe and library area, and provides small tables and comfortable chairs throughout COST PER SQ FT$204.90FEATURED IN2008 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYWork in Progress reading, studying and gathering. Various breakout rooms are incorporated in the design to promote collaboration among students and instructors. Additionally, numerous renovations and modifications were made to existing facilities.
Another goal of the project is to make multi-use space—such as internal large-group space and an outdoor amphitheater—available to the surrounding community. The addition, slated for LEED silver certification, incorporates sustainable-design principles and materials, including a rooftop garden serving as a plaza level above the student commons; a low-E, insulated glazing system; and a geothermal mechanical system.
The design of the building addition included a consensus planning process that involved—in addition to the entire design team—students, administrators, faculty, college board members and community members.
