School districts throughout central Texas are experiencing unprecedented growth as the Austin area continues its current population explosion, and few districts are growing more than Pflugerville Independent School District, located just north of the Austin city limits.
Copperfield Elementary School is truly a unique school. A split-level design afforded school CAPACITY825COST PER SQ FT$78.54FEATURED IN1999 Architectural Portfolio the ability to accommodate 800 students using a smaller building footprint than would have been required of a traditional one-story school. With a one-story design, school officials would have been forced to reduce the building’s student capacity in order to fit the site.
Other design features include: integrated technology links each classroom to the library; separated traffic patterns for pedestrians, school buses, and student pickup and dropoff; nearly all classrooms are located on exterior walls with large windows to admit natural light; bright colors and graphics are used throughout the facility to help create a fun learning environment; raised stage in the dining area makes this space ideal for school and community events, performances and meetings; core activity areas are easily accessible for after-hours use; the entrance tower and canopies provide a pleasing facade and smooth transition between the school and its surrounding community.
