The Center for Wellness at the College of New Rochelle is a paradisical garden for the exultation of the body. The center is a sheltered meditation precinct removed from the urban distractions that surround it. Each major program component is metaphorically inspired by a natural land form of the garden. The pool is the grotto, the gymnasium is a rock outcropping, and COST PER SQ FT$436.00FEATURED IN2008 Architectural Portfolio concourse that connects the gym to the pool is a stone crevasse cut deeply into the gently sloping site.
The project embraces sustainable-design strategies. For example, using the site topography, the lower level and pool are set beneath a contemplation roof garden. Maximizing the advantages of the site topography by placing 30 percent of the building beneath a grass roof is one of the many features that allows this project to qualify for a LEED silver rating.
The center includes a 1,500-seat gymnasium, six-lane competition pool, fitness center, holistic meditation room, classrooms and lockers/showers.
