Barat Academy is the first private, independent, Catholic high school in St. Charles County, and its leaders wanted the site to be unique: single-gender education on a co-educational, highly motivating campus that supports lifelong learning and service.
The location is adjacent to a 173-acre park; the Barat Haven community of houses, offices, retail establishments COST PER SQ FT$183.68FEATURED IN2008 Architectural Portfolio a hospital; and across from Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. The architect was commissioned to design a school that would enhance the neighborhood components, yet advance nearby educational opportunities.
After designers developed a careful master plan, the first phase was completed by fall 2007, in time to educate the founding freshman class of 82 students. Other phases will accommodate additional classes. The school eventually will hold 600 students in grades 9 to 12.
The two-floor, 70,000-square-foot Founders Building is the main academic hall and consists of a large lobby and chapel, as well as 60 classrooms, eight science laboratories with two prep rooms, administration and development offices, a bookstore, library with high-tech media center, IT department and eight breakout study rooms.
Remaining phases include a food-service and dining building, and a fine-arts and physical-education center. Art studios will include spaces for orchestra, band, chorus, ceramics, painting and graphic arts. The P.E. department will have a performance gym with seating for 750 spectators, and separate boys’ and girls’ state-of-the-art weight/fitness centers and locker rooms, a classroom, storage and faculty offices. The school offers cross country and soccer for boys, and field hockey, volleyball, cross country and golf for girls.
