The main challenge for this project was site development because of rugged topography and a large amount of rock excavation, which had to be performed to fit the building footprint. The two-story compact and efficient design eliminates excessive distances between classrooms and the rest of the building. The building is easier to supervise because of shorter corridors CAPACITY650COST PER SQ FT$152.24FEATURED IN2008 Architectural Portfolio better visibility.
A focal point for this school is the two-story media center that is on the lower floor at the core of the building. It has a unique, exposed steel roof structure that seems to sprout from the center of the room and gives the appearance of a “tree-like” form. Windows in the corridor above allow natural light to reach the media center.
Another unique feature is the outdoor dining area outside the cafeteria. This area is set up with picnic tables under a natural wood trellis. It also is a warm and inviting space for use during community or after-school activities.
