Kirksville Primary School presented interesting challenges. Needs included a districtwide K-2 primary school, competition fieldhouse and district preparation kitchen. The architects responded with a design that zones the building into a primary-school area, and a competition and kitchen area.
The primary school includes: a design highlighted by a colonnade and CAPACITY825COST PER SQ FT$95.98FEATURED IN1999 Architectural Portfolio arched canopy connecting the lobby and entry plaza; curvilinear office providing a window for viewing arrivals; a multipurpose room serving as a dining area, after-school activity area and foyer for the fieldhouse; core area providing administration, media center, counseling, reading and speech services; grade-level academic villages of nine classrooms, special-education classroom and teacher-planning centers; graphics with accent colors for each village that assist young students in finding their way through the building; computer work areas for each classroom and support area that are connected to the local-area network (LAN).
The competition and kitchen area includes: competition basketball and volleyball courts; retractable seating for 1,500; mezzanine that doubles as an activity area for K-2 physical-education program; preparation kitchen for 2,500 meals per day.
