Prior to the remodel, the 50-year-old student union was dark, technologically under-equipped, and not highly visible from the rest of the campus. As a result, the No. 1 goal of this project was to provide a student union that would be used heavily by students.
The end result was highly successful with a focus on transparency—both from inside by removing walls, and COST PER SQ FT$156.00FEATURED IN2008 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYStudent Centers/Service Areas the inside-out and outside-in by the addition of walls of windows. The use of varying floor finishes, wall color, floating ceilings and lighting techniques provides visual definition without the use of divider walls. New elements added were a permanent coffee bar; a cyber cafe; a lounge full of modular, movable furniture; flatscreen TVs; and large whiteboards for use by individual study groups. Office areas were reconfigured for the college staff and student government. Large meeting rooms that are a revenue source for the college received new finishes.
The building’s distinctive architecture was maintained and elements were repeated using lighter, more contemporary materials.
