The design of Tecumseh High School married the old with the new seamlessly. Balancing community values with state requirements, the district elected to keep the existing gym and auditorium, and construct the new facility around them. However, community-engagement efforts revealed that the community desired a traditional red-brick building rather than the existing COST PER SQ FT$139.04FEATURED IN2008 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYLibraries/Media Centers brick. To blend the two, the brick on the old portion was stained to match the red brick of the new building.
The main feature of the new hourglass-shaped building is a large, daylighted media center. The pie-shaped media center is tucked into the center of the school’s academic wings and serves as a focal point. The two-story space features a wood-beamed ceiling and warm colors to welcome students to the space. To provide additional daylight, an open second-floor bridge features floor-to-ceiling windows and connects the two academic wings.
The overall design of the space serves as the literal and figurative heart of the building. A large computer lab and conference room are adjacent to the space. In addition, the media center opens to the courtyard to provide outdoor classroom space.
