This new middle school for grades 5 to 8 was built to accommodate an increasing enrollment. It has alleviated crowding within the district’s existing elementary and secondary schools. At this time, it is open partially for classroom use as construction is completed elsewhere. Four houses within the plan are supported by core functions and “specials” situated off a Main Street connecting corridor that runs the length of the building.
The new middle school is on the same site as the existing elementary school. Through careful design, the new building position and planned vehicular traffic patterns allow for efficient land use and promote student safety.
Hampton Bays Middle School has been designed with the goal of receiving LEED silver certification. It provides an efficient, healthful and environmentally aware educational environment. The exterior envelope has been insulated extensively. Promotion of indoor air quality has been a significant design factor that has guided interior materials selection, as well as mechanical system design. Products high in recycled content were selected for construction.
