The Knott Auditorium, situated on the campus of Mount St. Mary’s University, is one of the first impressions prospective students have of this private institution.
The architect was retained to develop an updated interior design with an inviting non-institutional look, as well as establish campus standards for furnishings. In a collaborative process with COST PER SQ FT$8.77FEATURED IN2008 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYAuditoriums/Music Rooms administration, the interior designer created a design scheme using beautiful mural-size photographs of the campus printed on stretched fabric acoustical panels. In this spirit of collaboration, one of the selected mural photographs was taken by the university president’s wife, Irene Powell. Warm wall and railing paint colors were recommended to complement the new photo mural panels, in addition to new carpeting and fiber-optic backlit glass signage featuring the university’s logo. Photographer William Champion fabricated and installed the completed panels and glass signage.
The Knott Auditorium renovation succeeds as an impressive assembly space that has been transformed on a remarkably conservative budget.
