Since 1892, a school has been situated on the corner of Eighth and Main in Murray, Ky. In 1922, the original structure was replaced because of a fire. In 2007, the final phase of the addition and renovation of Murray Middle School was completed. This project was done in three phases:
•Phase I: The addition is a two-story, load-bearing masonry structure with CAPACITY600COST PER SQ FT$75.33FEATURED IN2007 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYRenovation three-story connector, consisting of 47,900 square feet. Demolition and utility relocation also were included in this phase.
•Phase II: Included the remodeling of the existing three-story building. This consisted of 56,630 square feet and included new finishes; HVAC; electrical; lighting; plumbing; and fire-alarm, intercom and fire-suppression systems.
•Phase III: Included the remaining demolition of buildings and site development, including parking lots, bus and service drives, site lighting, sidewalks, curbs and grading.
The result is an improved facility that increased the curb appeal of the entire school campus. Classrooms were updated, while the rich traditions and architectural language of this historic education facility were preserved.
