The fieldhouse addition at The Prairie School provides competition courts, locker rooms, a fitness center, dance studio and indoor running track.
The major challenge was to generate an appropriate addition to the existing Prairie-style building with its variety of unusual building shapes, including shallow, barrel-shed roof forms and gently curving exterior walls. The team took great care to use forms and materials that emulate the existing structure and provide a near seamless expansion. Curved and canted exterior walls and the barrel-vaulted roof are meshed carefully with the existing building. The central barrel vault encloses a lobby connecting the existing gymnasium with the new fieldhouse, and linking to second-floor functions with a dramatic stairway and cantilevered overlook. An upper-floor running track follows the perimeter of the structure. A unique 8-foot ribbon of exterior glass just below the roof structure allows penetration of daylight and provides stunning exterior views at night.
