The first building to be built on Quinnipiac University’s new, 240-acre York Hill Campus, this sports center commands its hilltop site with dramatic southerly views to New Haven and Long Island Sound beyond. The center’s two wings, one housing a 3,570-seat basketball arena and the other a 3,286-seat ice hockey arena, pivot from a central entrance lobby hub CAPACITY3,570COST PER SQ FT$288.32FEATURED IN2007 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized 45-degree angles. Their splayed glass walls form the center’s entrance court on the north and open to the panoramic views to the south.
The curved roofs of the two arenas lower the eaves and reduce the apparent mass of the complex, allowing a human scale to prevail at grade. On the concourse level, the central lobby provides access to both arenas. The mezzanine level accommodates the university club with lounge and balcony seating overlooking both arenas. Locker rooms, training rooms, team rooms and other support facilities are at the lower level, beneath the seats. In the central core, a large exercise room arcs from east to west with views to the south.
“Extraordinary sports complex! Great use of lighting for viewing events.”--2007 jury
