The increasing land costs and consistent demand for new schools because of the expanding population in Forsyth County, Ga., has led to the use of numerous two-story designs. Little Mill Middle School shows how perceived site and time limitations can be overcome through innovation and cooperation with a design that remains true to the artistic vision of CAPACITY1,062COST PER SQ FT$124.92FEATURED IN2007 Architectural Portfolio community.
The front entry pavilion of the school features a bowed projection that is echoed on the back. The brick detailing on the exterior is composed of horizontal banding using sawtooth brick. These two design elements create visual texture and interest out of a simple form.
The interior is highlighted with a dramatic double stairway leading to the second floor. The curvature of the windows on the landing and clerestory lighting throughout the school generate a warm and naturally illuminated environment even on the cloudiest of days. The media center and cafeteria, situated on the main floor of the building, and the spacious gymnasium on the second floor all bestow additional architectural focal points.
