A new high-density, 105,000-square-foot campus has replaced a decaying facility. It accommodates 1,300 students in a creative magnet program that balances the arts with science, math and technology.
The buildings establish an aesthetic compatible with the surrounding civic center. A simple campus plan emphasizes safety and accessibility. The main entrance leads into CAPACITY1,300COST PER SQ FT$285.71FEATURED IN2007 Architectural Portfolio two-story administration building and adjacent library/learning resource center. To the west are two, two-story classroom wings and an adjacent two-story art, science and mathematics wing. An indoor gymnasium combines a stage, food-service area and outdoor covered gathering area to support a variety of functions. The cornerstone of the campus is the original theater building, restored to support school and community theater. The high-density design provides much-needed inner-city, open-space play fields.
Environmental techniques address CHPS and LEED energy-efficiency and sustainability goals, and isolate the building interiors from airplane noise from the overhead flight path. The site is enhanced by telecommunication systems for a state-of-the-art learning environment. The goal is to lead, instruct and empower students to succeed in school and in life.
