Dakota County Technical College, Library and Commons Renovation

Rosemount, Minnesota

This project included expansion of the existing library; computer lab, classroom and lecture hall renovations; and new staff offices. One of the primary discussions with the college involved defining the role of the library in relation to technology and student demand. The design team responded by challenging spaces that traditionally are included within the program of ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$128.60FEATURED IN2007 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYLibraries/Media CentersSUB CATEGORYRenovation library such as conference rooms, study areas and open reading space, and then situating these spaces outside the secure perimeter of the library in a central commons to increase access after hours.

The program was revised to include areas such as academic support and tutor rooms to provide a more direct and comprehensive learning environment through multiple aligned spaces in lieu of one traditional library space.

Aesthetically, the design concept uses light (a metaphor for technology) as a building material to complement the existing concrete finishes. Translucent walls are illuminated from within to provide this accent. Curved metal ceilings and new pendant lighting further enhance the linear design.
