The project involved building an 18,000-square-foot auditorium with a 1,000-square-foot raised stage, boys’ and girls’ dressing rooms, and a 2,000-square-foot mezzanine level within the existing shell of the demolished auditorium. Concrete remedial work was undertaken to reinforce the existing masonry work, and new steel girders and a truss roof system were installed. The interiors display an open ceiling plan with suspended acoustical clouds that direct and enhance sound quality. Angled sidewalls also were used to improve the acoustics of the space. Finish materials in the auditorium included prefinished wood paneling for the walls, carpet and slate tiles for the floor, and classical column enclosures at the lobby. Recessed and task lighting were provided in the lobby where student art is displayed.
The new auditorium provides enhanced accessibility to the mezzanine level, fire-protection systems and a new chilled-water HVAC system with separate control zones.
