The existing modernist buildings of Monroe Comprehensive High School in Dougherty County, Ga., served as the muse for the innovative and contemporary design of this large-scale addition. The exterior elevation was reinvented by an inspired 2006 interpretation of a 1950s school.
The additional 81,907 square feet doubles the size of the facility and provides the canvas COST PER SQ FT$137.65FEATURED IN2006 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYRenovation a masterpiece crafted in glass and precast concrete. The covered entry portico softens the facade through its curvature and translucent panels. The interior of the building is illuminated naturally by glass walls that also serve as the link to all major core areas of the school on one side. A picturesque outdoor courtyard and open-air colonnade are incorporated for function and artistic vision. Vocational classrooms, a media center, cafeteria/kitchen and administration areas complete the addition.
