The Brooks Academy of Science and Engineering (BASE) is a K-12 charter school with a science and engineering focus. The first phase, a middle school for grades 6 to 9, will have 400 students. The strategic location on Brooks City Base, a joint military/private sector R&D campus, extends the classroom by exposing students to cutting-edge science and ASSOCIATED FIRMCivica, LLCCAPACITY400COST PER SQ FT$128.00FEATURED IN2006 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYWork in Progress innovation.
The K-12 school will form a quadrangle to create a learning community where younger students will benefit from older students by proximity as well as mentoring. The building itself functions as a learning tool with exposed structure and mechanical systems. The sustainable approach includes passive solar design through the building’s orientation, use of sunscreens on the south elevation, and a disciplined use of fenestration to capture daylight. Rainwater and A/C condensate harvesting will irrigate the native vegetation, and local and recycled building materials will be used.
The pre-engineered metal building system relates the school to its location on a former military base, while providing an economy of means with simple building massing to meet its programmatic and mechanical requirements.
