The new middle school building will incorporate grades 5 to 8. The project was developed in response to a projected enrollment increase throughout the district and to relieve congestion at existing schools.
The project is on the same site as the existing elementary school. The district already owns the parcel where the building is situated; therefore, ASSOCIATED FIRMBeatty Harvey & AssociatesCOST PER SQ FT$270.00FEATURED IN2006 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYWork in Progress site-acquisition costs were required. This allowed for the removal of deteriorating temporary structures, and improvements to the bus loop and parking facilities for both buildings. No additional site development or new athletic fields were necessary for the new buildings because of this site selection.
The new building is designed to obtain LEED silver certification and provides an efficient, environmentally aware and healthful teaching environment. The exterior envelope has been insulated extensively including walls designed four times the code minimum, a roof more than 1.5 times the code minimum, and window insulation two times greater than the code minimum. All mechanical systems operate at higher efficiencies, are ozone-friendly, and have been downsized because of the exterior envelope improvements. Indoor air quality was a significant design factor during interior product selection and resulted in materials with recycled content, low-VOCs and natural resources. Using products high in recycled content was considered in the building design and includes structural steel, concrete and masonry walls.
