The renovation of the Student Center at South Dakota State University includes 35,600 square feet of new construction and 20,800 square feet of remodeled spaces. The facility includes an expanded bookstore to accommodate peak buying and selling times, complemented with flexible space to avoid congestion and long lines, and additional retail space. An important component of the facility was the need for high-quality, desirable food-service spaces and dining options. The servery adds seating to the dining area and includes Kettle Classics, Salad Garden, Wokery, Home Zone, Grille Works, Tortilla Fresco, 1881 Ice Cream Shoppe and Java City.
Student gathering spaces were addressed in the design by adding additional semi-quiet rooms, incorporating spaces to highlight student art, and adding a multipurpose auditorium with seating for 325 with a stage that can be used for banquets, meetings, exhibit/booth space and theatrical productions.
