The design team worked closely with school administrators to develop a design that would satisfy program requirements and present an innovative design. A two-story main hall provides circulation to classroom wings, and promotes interaction among faculty and students. Exploration and interaction are encouraged through vast window openings facing the oceanography and biology laboratories off the main hall, showcasing their 1,500-gallon holding tanks. Operable partitions between laboratories allow for integration of classes for large-group instruction.
Natural lighting is incorporated into the facility through a massive 33-foot-long by 16-foot-wide skylight in the main hall, as well as through skylights in hallways and classrooms.
Bold interior colors representing the sun, Earth and ocean were selected to distinguish each wing.
