One of the world’s top engineering schools has created a new freestanding building for its biomedical engineering school. The Purdue Biomedical Engineering Building accommodates the existing graduate and new undergraduate programs in this rapidly growing field.

The design process paralleled the curriculum development of the new program. Just as biomedical engineering ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$210.00FEATURED IN2006 Architectural Portfolio on making connections to enhance discovery, the design of the facility promotes connectivity, from the outside and the inside.

A gateway to Purdue’s new Discovery Park, the four-level facility links the newly established Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering with many campuswide life science and nanotechnology initiatives. Ample windows provide natural lighting and visually connect the building to its context.

Inside, classrooms, specialized teaching and research laboratories, team-based project rooms, counseling areas and interaction spaces create environments that encourage integration of people, activities and ideas. The design allows for flexible arrangements and accommodates evolving technology and systems.

The result is a building that enhances teaching, learning and research, and adapts to the interdisciplinary and ever-changing nature of science, helping Purdue advance its leadership in sciences and engineering.
