The cafeteria/commons was planned as a cafeteria, multipurpose room, large-group room and gathering space. Events now held there include meetings, cheerleading practice, dances, classes, luncheons and Board of Education receptions. On axis are two large public spaces: the auditorium and the gymnasium. The cafeteria/commons space also serves as a lobby for both. As a cafeteria, 500 students can be accommodated at one time. The space can either be closed off by vertical shutters that form traditional corridors around its perimeter, or remain open to the rest of the school on all four sides. Indirect lighting provides a pleasant, glare-free light, while the mezzanine walls hide HVAC units and provide a backdrop for future student murals. Clerestory windows on one wall supply natural light. Although the school opened just last fall, the cafeteria/commons is already heavily used from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. That proves the true success of this space.
