To simplify and improve the student-services experience, Onondaga Community College chose to renovate and expand the outdated, departmentalized Gordon Student Center into Student Central—a one-stop student service center.
Re-engineering the entire student-services process and reinventing old departments as new collaborative teams, the college employs cross-trained ASSOCIATED FIRMKing & King ArchitectsCOST PER SQ FT$151.72FEATURED IN2006 Architectural Portfolio and a “no wrong doors” philosophy for student services. Student Central provides a single point of contact for virtually all of students’ daily needs, including admissions, registration, counseling, cashier, financial aid, placement and testing. Amenities provided in the center include a highly visible help desk, coffee bar, call center, multipurpose room and gallery spaces.
During programming, the major challenge identified by the project team was to provide a design that reflects the customer-focused and student-centered philosophy of the college. The resulting design responds to this critical challenge by providing expansive views of surrounding terrain, and a clean, simple floor plan that facilitates a clear and linear student-services process. The welcoming design encourages interaction and presents visual connections, providing a stimulating space for staff to meet the needs of students.
