Since 1927, Greenville Elementary School has served the community of Greenville, Ky. The Muhlenberg County Board of Education decided to replace the aging facility with a new 67,000-square-foot elementary school. The end result is an exterior design that is sensitive and complementary to the area’s architecture; inside is a state-of-the-art educational facility for ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONASSOCIATED FIRMWBW Engineering, Inc.; Wilkie Engineering Inc.CAPACITY600COST PER SQ FT$127.54FEATURED IN2006 Architectural Portfolio community’s children.

The new facility houses 600 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The two-story structure features an impressive entrance lobby, a state-of-the-art media center, cafeteria, gymnasium, stage, 27 classrooms, a computer lab, science room, two special-education classrooms, administrative suites and a secure entrance hallway. The facility uses a geothermal heating/cooling system to reduce operating costs.

The facility’s design incorporated several learning aspects into its features such as the learning floor, which uses floor tiles to show how colors blend together, and a dome to use for a lesson on sound waves. The hallway striping creates a natural walkway to direct children throughout the facility.

This was a multi-phased construction project.
