The Hancock County Board of Education combined two aging facilities to form a new 73,000-square-foot elementary school for 600 students in grades pre-K to 5. The building program requirements were a one-story facility with traditional design elements, exterior materials that reflected the previous facilities’ exterior elements, low maintenance requirements, high energy ASSOCIATED FIRMWBW Engineering, Inc.; Hodge Design Associates; Badgett ConstructorsCAPACITY600COST PER SQ FT$120.95FEATURED IN2006 Architectural Portfolio and natural lighting throughout the facility. The site was raised 20 feet to increase its stature and visibility in the community.
The core facility design elements include a secure entrance lobby, state-of-the-art media center, cafeteria with exterior views, gymnasium, stage, 27 classrooms, two secure outside courtyards, a computer lab, music room, science/art room, special-education areas, a centralized audiovisual room with fiber-optic cable, and administrative suites. The facility uses a geothermal heating/cooling system to maximize the efficiency of the building. Each classroom has ample natural lighting provided by two courtyards, which helps reduce the need for artificial lighting.
This was a multi-phased construction project.
