The new Sandy Spring Friends School Athletic Center provides a second gymnasium and a fitness center for the school. It is designed to accommodate a pool addition at a later date.
The new athletic center is sited to avoid destruction of a hedgerow, a remnant of the campus’ agricultural past, and a habitat for small animals and birds. A central gallery has been created to bring daylight to the core of the building and to provide an appropriate place for championship banners and trophies, as well as student art.
Materials include a concrete floor in the lobby and corridors of the building, steel trusses and roof deck, low-VOC paints and fiber-cement siding.
