The Sandy Spring Friends School building provides a new home for the growing middle school. The building includes six general classrooms, three science rooms, a computer classroom, art and music rooms, as well as administrative and support space. The building is organized around a common area known as the “Collection Room,” which is part of the school’s tradition of COST PER SQ FT$158.44FEATURED IN2006 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYClassrooms students and teachers together for announcements and short meetings.
The building was situated to avoid destruction of a hedgerow, a remnant of the campus’ agricultural past and a habitat for small animals and birds. Bioretention areas were designed to contribute to the stormwater-management system, and the site landscape does not require irrigation.
The building is oriented to maximize daylighting. A green roof was designed for the center part of the building, but has not been installed. Materials include rubber flooring, exposed wood trusses and a roof deck, low-VOC paints and fiber-cement siding.
