Based upon the success of Phase I of the West Apartment Complex, which was completed in 2002, the architect was retained by Dormitory Authority, State of New York and Stony Brook University to design Phase II. This project involved the design of four buildings containing 678 beds in apartment suites.
The four three-story buildings are on a heavily wooded site CAPACITY678COST PER SQ FT$171.00FEATURED IN2005 Architectural Portfolio around a quadrangle. The buildings were sited to take advantage of existing trees and to minimize their removal. The Commons Building adjoins one of the residence halls, serving both this complex and the Phase I complex on the adjacent site. It includes a fitness center, computer lab, meeting rooms and administrative offices.
The apartment units are based on four and six single-bed arrangements. Each unit contains a common lounge, a kitchen and bathrooms. Each apartment suite also is outfitted with individualized climate controls and built-in data wiring.
