The University Center has an efficient plan that incorporates an array of health, fitness and sports areas, as well as social spaces. The building houses a 3,500-seat arena, an indoor pool, intramural courts for volleyball and basketball, an elevated running track, racquet courts, a rifle range, multipurpose room, aerobics and dance studio, ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCAPACITY3,500COST PER SQ FT$133.00FEATURED IN2005 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized rooms, classrooms, offices, conference rooms, locker rooms, athletic training facilities, a cafe, dining areas and various gathering spaces.

The building is organized along a tree-lined pedestrian walkway that runs through the middle of the enclosed structure’s main level. A glass ceiling 27 feet above the walkway admits natural light to the window-lined corridor, as well as to the rooms and spaces beside it.

The exterior skin is composed of brick and cast-stone accents, giving the facility a familiar relation with the original buildings on campus. The massing of the building is broken down into smaller components that relate to the scale of the existing structures surrounding the University Center.
