Situated at the main entrance and “front door” to Missouri’s premier technological research university, the Havener Student Center serves as the identifying icon for the 284-acre University of Missouri—Rolla (UMR) campus. After opening in early 2005, the facility quickly became UMR’s social gathering center, a feature the campus previously had lacked. The much-needed ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$127.00FEATURED IN2005 Architectural Portfolio is twice the size of the previous student union facilities.

The edifice is placed strategically with vistas and entry points to welcome visitors and promote the connection between indoor and outdoor campus activities. Designed to complement the educational experience through programs, activities and facilities, the building serves students, faculty, staff and guests.

The two-story stone and brick building houses the primary food-service facility on campus, a coffee shop, game room, the university bookstore, ample lounge and informal gathering areas, student organization offices, student activities administration, and more than 16,000 square feet of meeting and conference rooms.

The building organization and layout is anchored by a pair of carefully positioned, two-story atriums with high clerestory windows, which allow an abundance of natural light into the core of the facility and enhance space efficiency by limiting corridor space.

The building was designed to maximize flexibility of space, allowing multiple functions to occur within different spaces. The dining room opens onto a substantial outdoor cafe space, and the design also includes two additional outdoor gathering areas. The Havener Student Center will set a new standard and direction for future planning and development of the UMR campus.
