As the cornerstone of a $104 million construction program, the new Lima Senior High School needed to be a comprehensive educational facility that would reinforce connections between the district and the surrounding community.
To ensure the school occupied a prominent place in the community, the district purchased 196 properties at the entry to downtown. Visitors to CAPACITY1,356COST PER SQ FT$110.00FEATURED IN2005 Architectural Portfolio now are greeted by an on-axis view of the three-story academic wing. Window walls in the media center and the student commons provide dramatic views of downtown and create visual connections to the surrounding community. Collaboration with the city also extended the River Walk to the high school site.
Designed for maximum flexibility, the building includes an academic wing and space for adult education, as well as a variety of project-based learning opportunities. A working/teaching restaurant, run by students, caters to the community and outside businesses. A carefully arranged suite of shared-use spaces is anchored by the locally funded auditorium and full-competition gymnasium, both of which are zoned for after-hours use.
