The Arthur T. Cummings Elementary School replaces the Willis School on the same site and is named for the longtime principal, resident and building committee chair. Site constraints and context are as unique and varied as this isolated, residential community with extraordinary views of downtown Boston.
The school site defines one corner of the most important CAPACITY655COST PER SQ FT$173.30FEATURED IN2005 Architectural Portfolio in downtown Winthrop, with a circular brick plaza that gives form to the school entrance. The circular plaza also provides a focal point for outdoor festivals and commemorates the “hearth area” used by American Indians and settlers. On Hermon Street, the classroom wing faces small houses typical of Oceanside communities; on Pauline Street, the stately circa 1890 Victorian E.B. Newton School, now used for town offices, recaptures a bygone era, and gives form and context to the new gym/cafe-teria wing.
At the rear of the building, a perimeter drive provides parent dropoff and parking, and from this promontory, expansive views of Ingleside Park below.
