The focal point of the new London Elementary School is the grand media center, which serves as the activity hub of the building. The two-story space opens from the hall to the courtyard with a 23-foot expanse of windows. Internally, students are separated by lower and upper grades on the two identical floors.
Several concepts were incorporated to satisfy the COST PER SQ FT$102.34FEATURED IN2005 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYLibraries/Media Centers requirement of wayfinding. A serpentine storefront allows students to know when they have reached the media center, and bench seating provides ample space for an entire class to wait.
A drop ceiling with curved soffit, drawing students into the space, carries the circular theme inside. The curves are repeated in the carpet pattern to let students know when they are entering or leaving a specific area of the center. The repetitive use of color also allows students to navigate the library easily.
Several types of seating are included for students to learn and study. Six-station computer carrels provide supervised computer usage; and a mix of hard and soft seating gives students space to read and study.
