When renovating a 1966 auditorium into a multiuse Science Learning Center,

the university requested special-purpose classrooms for computerized

demonstration, and interaction and laboratory-style presentations; ADA

compliance; full mechanical, electrical and roofing upgrade; and an engaging

physical environment.

examination. Images from fractal geometry, particle physics, time and

calibration are visible in terrazzo patterns, wall reveals, acoustical wall

panels and ceilings. Classroom academics, maintenance and energy performance

are enhanced by: power and data paths to each student and teacher, connected

to the campus network and Internet; multimedia projection for

computer-designed lessons, websites, CDs, textbooks, videos, slides and

film; natural skylights and adjustable indirect lighting for activities from

interactive Internet lessons to pencil-and-paper diagrams; barrel-vaulted

corridor that extends campus walkway systems to classrooms; four independent

HVAC zones replacing a former single zone; durable materials-terrazzo,

fiber-reinforced wallboard, high-performance paint, carpeted base in aisles;

built-in connectivity for future student laptops in the teaching labs.
