The Parish of St. Ambrose in Annandale, Va., needed an activities center facility that would further answer the needs, values and goals of the parish, freeing up needed space in the present school.
The program called for a plan to create a permanent choir room seating 50 people, and a hall to seat 200 with dividing sound partition and a parish library. The project COST PER SQ FT$109.00FEATURED IN2004 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized relocated the administration office out of a lower-level office in the rectory to a more accessible and visual location. The administration office includes a pastor’s office, assistant religious director’s office, secretary/reception area, workroom and conference room.
The building is nestled in a wooded area with natural scenery from adjacent residential areas. The exterior design complements the existing parish buildings and the residential neighborhood. This was accomplished with medium-brown brick, the arch entrance canopy, the bay window in the library and the arch dormer at the end of the hall. The tower emphasizes the entrance of the building and illuminates the foyer with four circular windows.
The interior has sloped ceilings in the hall and a recessed ceiling in the choir room. All spaces are handicapped-accessible. The construction is masonry-bearing walls, wood trusses, carpeted floor in the administration, and resilient tile for the hall and choir room.
