Kinkaid School, a Houston private school, desired a new teaching theater. The new building sits tightly within the existing campus. Another challenge was to design a 750-seat proscenium theater to accommodate the diverse acoustic presentations of lectures, dance, drama and concerts. The design also needed to be a “natural sound house” to accommodate young performers CAPACITY750COST PER SQ FT$233.00FEATURED IN2004 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized maturing voices.
The design approach was to create an intimate theater through the use of a small circular seating plan. The seating plan is framed around the perimeter with a ring of up-lighted columns framing a double level of box seats along the circular room.
The use of materials, the lighting of the balcony faces, a ring of columns and the central glass oculus create a greater intimacy between performers and the audience, and between the audience and stage presentations.
