Attached to Hastings High School, the community center provides residents with a childcare center, teen center, gymnasium and fitness area, swimming pool and community meeting rooms. Students and representatives of community organizations planned the function of each area. Community organizations such as the YMCA conduct some of the center’s activities.
Design challenges for the community center included severe site restrictions, the difficulty of providing access from several directions while maintaining security, establishing the identity of the center as part of a larger school building, and integrating the center into the school system’s educational program. These challenges were met, and the result is a facility that will serve the community’s need for generations to come.
