The University of Houston (UH) had a vision for new spaces to promote wellness, and provide areas for social and recreational activities. This vision was realized in 2003 when the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center opened.
One of the main components of the recreation center is the indoor aquatic competition facility and outdoor pool. The aquatic design engineer, ASSOCIATED FIRMHughes Group Architects, Architect of RecordCOST PER SQ FT$161.86FEATURED IN2004 Architectural Portfolio with the lead architect and recreation advisory committee, designed a facility that best fit the needs of the UH community. The indoor pool is the largest collegiate pool in the nation at 1.3 million gallons. Included in the facility is a 70-meter by 25-yard competition pool with movable bulkheads that form several pool configurations, a 10-meter diving platform, a 3-meter springboard and a 1-meter spring board.
Students and faculty also use the outdoor facility. Some of the amenities of the outdoor leisure facility include a zero-depth entry, activity area, body slide and waterfall. Also included are a 275-square-foot indoor whirlpool, and a 300-square-foot outdoor whirlpool with hydrotherapy jets and waterfall.
