The new 52,260-square-foot student union at Florida Gulf Coast University is a university-wide resource for students, faculty, staff and visitors. The center encapsulates the spirit of the university with a flexible design that accommodates a number of uses.
The facility includes a 5,000-square-foot, 350-seat ballroom, an 8,000-square-foot university bookstore, COST PER SQ FT$137.85FEATURED IN2004 Architectural Portfolio 2,600-square-foot student lounge/pub, multiple student meeting areas/chambers, student government and student-life offices, and a food court with a full kitchen and catering capabilities. The central two-story lobby and linear gallery separate the different areas, and create clear and active circulation spaces. Custom-designed decorative aluminum handrails and balustrades are a focal point of the interior central staircase, and flank the stairs and patio outside of the building. An outdoor dining patio and a second-floor terrace overlook the university lake.
A chiming clock tower, visible and audible throughout the campus, and a dramatic circular roof at the courtyard entrance reinforce the building’s role as the symbolic and social heart of the campus.
