The Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute is on the Health Sciences campus of the University of Southern California, northeast of downtown Los Angeles. This building’s unique architectural presence initiates a new design direction for the Keck School of Medicine. Phase I of the new Research Quadrangle, linking the academic and clinical areas of the campus, serves as a state-of-the-art research facility for basic and clinical neuroscience. The five-story building is organized as two interlocking L-shaped bars containing laboratories, support spaces and researchers’ offices.
A vivarium and nuclear magnetic resonance suite are on the basement level. The ground floor includes three laboratory suites, a large conference/seminar room, administration offices, a cafe and a loading dock. The balance of the building houses 24 laboratory suites, support space and office suites with mechanical space in the rooftop penthouse.
