In 2001, the architect was selected to modify this unique, primarily underground structure originally completed in 1969. With a rooftop plaza to create an open space, the structure sits at the center of the academic core of campus buildings.
The architect was called upon to develop a new collaborative relationship within this building among the many different COST PER SQ FT$134.00FEATURED IN2004 Architectural Portfolio that enhance the quality of student life at the University of Northern Iowa. The offices of student government, student activities, student organizations, international student services and the Center for Multicultural Education were brought together in one location to increase collaboration while maintaining a sense of each group’s identity.
The project includes 35,000 square feet of renovated space, which includes new meeting rooms and restrooms on the lower level. On the main level, the university completed a substantial expansion and renovation of the coffeehouse—a significant student gathering area, food-service outlets and support facilities. A new retail campus store has been developed in conjunction with an expanded student information center, and a new entrance has been added to this unique building of more than 16 separate floor levels.
