The architect transformed Blanchard Hall, the historic former gymnasium, and built major additions to create an inviting, lively focus for campus activities and organizations.
A new three-story skylighted atrium is abuzz with activity in lounges, a coffee bar, information desk, bookstore, convenience store, game room, art gallery and mailroom. A glazed two-story “great room” addition can be used as a venue for performances, concerts, dances and speakers.
Upstairs under exposed wooden trusses are student organizations, publications, a radio station, workspace and meeting rooms. Multi-level entrances invite users from all campus directions to pass through the building. Terraces extend the activities outdoors, with cascading lawns to the lakefront, past a relocated campus roadway and building services.
The facility was designed to achieve LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
