To accommodate rapid growth along the southern portion of Rockingham County and the need to update many existing facilities throughout the county, Rockingham County Schools has embarked on a program of new construction and renovations. The first project, Huntsville Elementary School, is an elementary school for the southwest area. The design of this facility is CAPACITY600COST PER SQ FT$113.00FEATURED IN2004 Architectural Portfolio to be the prototype for three additional elementary schools to be constructed in the Monroeton, Williamsburg and Bethany communities.
A design committee of teachers, administrators and residents from all four communities met to discuss their goals and priorities for the design of the new schools. Many educational and community-use features have been incorporated into the design. The administrative offices are situated prominently at the main entrance for adequate supervision of all visitors entering the facility. The grade levels are broken down into smaller “houses” consisting of two grade levels each. The gymnasium, stage and dining room are situated so they can be used by the community after hours while the academic portion of the building is secured.
