This three-story K-4 facility offers a bright and open learning environment in a building with timeless, classic appeal, allowing it to fit in well with its neighboring historic district. The school features a cafetorium, media center, controlled-access main entry vestibule, gymnasium, art and music rooms, and 26 classrooms and support areas.
The architects developed CO FIRMFanning Howey CAPACITY575COST PER SQ FT$130.20FEATURED IN2004 Architectural Portfolio multistory design as a cost-efficient solution to replacing the existing school on the same 5.5-acre site. Because the school needed to remain operational during construction, existing modular classrooms were repositioned to form a corral around the playground, protecting students from construction activities.
Besides safely maintaining oper- ations of the existing school, the architects helped preserve the school’s history by integrating key artifacts into the design that respect the personality of the community. The historic bell from the Montgomery Special School—built on the same site in 1899—now resides in the new bell tower modeled after the original. Also, an arched dedication stone from this same school serves as the focal point of the main entry.
