The multipurpose room is part of a 45,000-square-foot U-shaped addition to a former grammar school. This central space functions as both an assembly area and gymnasium.
Once inside, the curved metal roof and exposed mechanical ductwork hover over a simulated wood floor, motorized basketball backboards and retractable bleachers. A new regulation-size baseball field can be accessed easily from the multipurpose room, enabling activities to be continued outdoors.
Other features include a full working stage with a performance curtain, special stage lighting and a high-tech sound system. A soft folding divider enhances the functionality of the space so that activities can occur simultaneously.
The design challenge of the multipurpose room was to cohesively blend a two-story space into a predominantly one-story building. This was accomplished by placing the multipurpose room away from the front of the building, matching exterior masonry color, and breaking down the scale of the facades by using accent bands and recessed soldier coursing.
